My Momma said Sonny, here's your new guitar
I brought it with the money I been saving in my jar
It ain't really new but it plays like Earnie sings
A few scratches here and there and just a couple dings

And then she said make sure you play it every other day
And be sure and add your story boy of what you're wanting to say
You can talk to God as your friend and pray everyday
You can be like that train stay on the track
And he'll help you, find your way ...

Yeah, Momma did most the talking
While Daddy spoke with his eyes
And every day he went to work after saying his goodbyes
He said in life I'll show you how, you really can succeed
And if you listen to me boy, you'll get just what you need
He said right here in these old parts, we don't need luxuries
He said were much more better off with the bare necessities

Yeah, Momma and Daddy lived to be - up in their golden age
Well, I'd like to see them both again
That story's a part of my best page
And when I do I'll play for Ma, a song she won't forget!
And teaching me to say my prayers, she surely won't regret!
And giving me that old guitar - it's gonna get better yet ...
